The City of Novgorod - What will you see in this tour?Yuryev Monastery

Veliky Novgorod (in English "Novgorod the Great") was first mentioned in documents in 859 AD and is hereby one of the oldest Russian cities.

The fact that the 29th Hanseatic Day in 2009 was held in the City of Novgorod is entirely grounded in the history of the city. Novgorod was situated on the trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks," that connected the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea. Thanks to the convenient traffic conditions, Novgorod converted into an important commercial centre in the 10th century. Later it became one of the Hanseatic Cities.

Kremlin and St. Sophia Cathedral

It is interesting that Novgorod is home to one of the earliest democracies. Between 12th and 15th century, there existed the early Democratic Republic of Novgorod, which stretched from the Baltic to the Urals. The highest organ of power was the Veche (public assembly). At that time the city was called "His Majesty Lord Novgorod the Great”.

Wooden Art Museum Vitoslavlitsy
The entire old town of Novgorod is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1992. Many churches, monasteries, the Kremlin with the Cathedral of St. Sophia (1050) have been preserved from the Middle Ages; the "Millennium of Russia” Monument shows the whole history of the Russian state. In the surroundings of Novgorod, the Yuryev Monastery at the Lake Ilmen and the open-air Museum "Vitoslavlitsy" (when closed will be replaced by the Russian Icons museum) are popular destinations. You will admire all this and more in the course of your day trip to Novgorod.

The day trip to Novgorod takes about 11-12 hours. You will be picked up from the hotel at 8am by the driver with a car, minivan or bus depending on the number of guests. Around 11am you will reach the City of Novgorod, where you will be greeted and guided by your personal tour guide from Novgorod: Alexandra in English or Lyudmila in German (further languages upon request).
